Characteristics of Nahanni National Park
Nahanni National Park is full of outstanding rivers, canyons, gorges, huge waterfalls and alpine tundra. It is a reserve and it protects part of the Mackenzie Mountains. Nahanni National Park is a 4700 sq. km. natural area of many canyons cutting through mountains. The park is significant for its form and complexity of evolution. There are also many forests in this park with variations on wet, mesic, and dry habitats.
Plants and Animals
Nahanni National Park contains many types of plants and animals. There are white spruces at valley bottoms. At higher altitudes and at northern parts of the park there is also black spruce. Near Virginia Falls there are many types of orchid species and Alpine tundras have sedges, lichens, grasses and shrubs at the high mountains of the Tlogotsho, Headless and Funeral ranges. There are over 600 kinds of plants in this national park. There are 42 species of mammals like the grey wolf, grizzly bear and the black bear. There are also 180 types of birds. South Nahanni River
South Nahanni River is a very famous river in Nahanni National Park. It flows 563 km south east of Selwyn Mountains and cuts through the Mackenzie Mountains and then empties in the Liard River. The South Nahanni River also has many nationally significant natural features, which you can visit. These include Virginia Falls, spectacular canyons, hot springs, geological formations which escaped glaciation, and many wildlife species that are threatened with extinction elsewhere. If you travel directly downstream you will see Rabitkettle Hotsprings, Virginia Falls, which is twice the drop of Niagara Falls, a series of canyons up to 1200m deep, and you will see many other sites like underground rivers.
